The joke, explained

Funny karaoke songs

Novelty songs that land, and a straight answer on which ones need total commitment to work at all.

A funny karaoke song is a gamble with a very specific failure mode. Done at full commitment it is the best three minutes of the night. Done sheepishly, at half volume, while apologising with your body language, it is the longest three minutes anyone in that room will experience.

So the honest advice is that the song matters less than the delivery. Every title here can work. Most of them will not, if you are visibly embarrassed to be singing it. There is no halfway.

Beyond that, two things separate the reliable choices from the risky ones. Whether the crowd already knows the joke, and whether it is short. A novelty song that outstays its welcome curdles fast, and the room will not tell you it has happened.

# Song · Why it lands Range low → high Difficulty Length
  1. 1 Total Eclipse of the HeartGroup Bonnie Tyler1983Popkey G#130 bpm Enormous, absurd and much harder than anyone expects. Its saving grace is that the whole room wants it to be ridiculous, so going too far is the correct approach. 4:27
  2. 2 Man! I Feel Like a Woman! Shania Twain1997Countrykey A#125 bpm Opens with a spoken line, which is the friendliest possible way into a song, and the chorus is pure celebration. 3:54
  3. 3 That Don't Impress Me Much Shania Twain1998Countrykey A#125 bpm Half of it is delivered as an eye-roll rather than a melody, and the joke does the work. 4:27
  4. 4 Summer NightsDuet John Travolta1978Pop A duet that is really a conversation, with a room shouting the responses between the lines. Almost impossible to ruin. 3:36
  5. 5 Believe Cher1998Pop133 bpm The vocal effect on the record does something no human does, which paradoxically frees you: nobody expects you to match it. 4:00
  6. 6 WannabeGroup Spice Girls1996Popkey B110 bpm Mostly rhythm, half of it spoken, and every person in the room over thirty knows every word. 3:58
  7. 7 Sk8er Boi Avril Lavigne2002Popkey C149 bpm Almost entirely shouted, fast, and funnier now than it was at the time. 3:24
  8. 8 Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) Beyoncé2008Pop More chant than melody, and the choreography is what the room is watching anyway. 5:41
  9. 9 Poker Face Lady Gaga2008Popkey E119 bpm More hook than melody, and the nonsense syllables in the chorus are the part the room is waiting for. 3:59
  10. 10 Shake It OffGroupTalk-sing Taylor Swift2014Pop Half of it is spoken and the rest is a chant. Almost impossible to sing badly enough to matter. 3:39
  11. 11 Girls Just Want to Have FunGroup Cyndi Lauper1983Popkey F#120 bpm Pure celebration with a chorus the entire room sings. Higher than it feels, but nobody is listening that closely. 3:58
  12. 12 Material Girl Madonna1984Popkey C136 bpm Light, bright and slightly arch, and the delivery matters far more than the notes. 4:01
  13. 13 VogueTalk-sing Madonna1990Pop Almost entirely spoken. The famous section is a list of names, delivered deadpan. 4:51
  14. 14 Careless Whisper George Michael1984Pop The saxophone gets the applause and you get a slow, low, comfortable melody. An unusually good deal. 5:00
  15. 15 Uptown Girl Billy Joel1983Rockkey E129 bpm Relentlessly fast and much higher than anyone remembers. Enormous fun if you can keep up. 3:18
  16. 16 Twist and ShoutGroupTalk-sing The Beatles1963Rock & Rollkey D125 bpm Shouted from beginning to end. Lennon recorded it with a ruined voice, which tells you everything about how polished yours needs to be. 2:35
  17. 17 Come On EileenGroup Dexys Midnight Runners1982Popkey D107 bpm Chaotic, joyful and impossible to perform seriously. The tempo change at the end is the whole point. 4:47
  18. 18 Don't Stop Me NowGroup Queen1978Rockkey F156 bpm Fast, joyful and much harder than its reputation. The words come quickly and the melody keeps climbing. 3:29
  19. 19 Y.M.C.A.GroupTalk-sing Village People1978Popkey F#126 bpm Nobody is listening to your voice. They are watching four letters being spelled with arms. 4:48
  20. 20 Take On MeGroup a-ha1985Synthpopkey F#m84 bpm Everyone attempts the falsetto. Almost nobody reaches it. The attempt is, at this point, part of the tradition. 3:45
  21. 21 Baby Got BackGroupTalk-sing Sir Mix-a-Lot1992Hip-Hop Entirely spoken, and the room delivers the opening dialogue for you. Requires no singing whatsoever. 4:23
  22. 22 Ice Ice BabyGroupTalk-sing Vanilla Ice1990Hip-Hopkey Gm117 bpm Spoken start to finish over a bassline everyone recognises in two notes. 4:31
  23. 23 I'm Too SexyTalk-sing Right Said Fred1991Pop128 bpm Seven semitones, mostly spoken, and utterly ridiculous. It only fails if you look embarrassed. 2:44
  24. 24 Barbie GirlDuet Aqua1997Pop130 bpm A novelty duet where both parts are deliberately silly voices, which removes any question of singing well. 3:20
  25. 25 Never Gonna Give You Up Rick Astley1987Popkey G#113 bpm A famously incongruous voice and a chorus the entire internet knows. The joke is doing most of the work. 3:34
  26. 26 Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of...)GroupTalk-sing Lou Bega1999Latin Popkey Fm87 bpm A list of names over a horn riff. Barely sung, extremely fast, and the room shouts the names with you. 3:40
  27. 27 Bye Bye ByeGroup *NSYNC2000Pop86 bpm The choreography is the performance and everyone in the room can do the arm movement. 3:20
  28. 28 All StarGroupTalk-sing Smash Mouth1999Rockkey B104 bpm Every single person knows the first line, which means the room is with you before you have really begun. 3:20
  29. 29 Hey Ya!Talk-sing OutKast2003Hip-Hop Rapped, sung and shouted in roughly equal parts, at a tempo that never lets up. 3:55
  30. 30 Umbrella Rihanna2007Pop The hook is a single word repeated, and the room supplies it every time. 4:36
  31. Nothing matches those filters. Try clearing one.

Funny karaoke songs: your questions answered

What are the funniest karaoke songs?

The ones the room already knows the joke to. Novelty hits from the nineties and early two thousands do this best, because everyone recognises them instantly.

Is a funny karaoke song a safe choice?

Only at full commitment. A half hearted novelty performance is the single worst outcome available at karaoke.
